Rob took upthe post of CEO Designate in late Aug, learning the‘ins-&-outs’ of JTG under the guidance of formerceo, Peter Lacaze. Prior to taking the helm at JTGlast week, Rob spent 14 years with Qantas, mostrecently as Group ExecutiveQantas Airlines Commercial. How has the travel industry evolved during your career? The most profound changes are, firstly, the emergence of the weband how this has transformed both access to product and speed offlow of information.Secondly, the rapid growth of low cost carriers and the heavily pricestimulated market growth these airlines have created.Thirdly, the “new order” within the full service carrier environment. The growth of Emirates to the largest airline in the world is theleading symbol of this change. The ability of travel agents to adapt and be successful in anincreasing, changing and at times volatile external environment isanother key change. Finally, the changing emphasis of AFTA to advocate in key strategicareas of value for the travel industry. What are your immediate and long-term goals as CEO of JTG?I’ve come into this business with a broad understanding of the partsand the totality of JTG.At Qantas, I was always a key advocate and supporter of the mergerof the JTG and Stella businesses. I am now getting to know themechanics of the individual business units, as well as meeting thepeople who make the business click.I’ve asked Boston Consulting Group to work with Management andour business partners to help frame the strategic options for thebusiness that will set us up for success over the next 3-5 years.I am pretty clear, that for JTG to be successful, our business modelmust embrace aligning the economic interests of our supplier andagency network partners and JTG.What’s your view on the importance of ‘bricks-&-mortar’ travelagencies in today’s market.I think that is a broader issue than just travel. The question is therelevance of ‘bricks-&-mortar ‘retail. If we think about the stakeholders, from the investment funds thatown the retail shopping assets, business that provide managementservices, the retailers large and small, the suppliers and manufacturersof products and services and of course the consumer, there are a lot ofpeople with skin in the game and a lot of capital invested. We have to provide reasons for consumers to want to walk into storesand transact business. So the future relevance and viability of physicalretail will hinge on the experiences that we create for our customers. While debate continues to ebb and flow around the role and presenceof the internet - friend or foe - I unequivocally see it as a friend. It hasbrought an immediacy and access to vast amounts of knowledge andinformation for both clients and travel agents.Similarly, there is often discussion around the “increasing” propensityfor suppliers and partners to distribute their product direct. While Iabsolutely recognise the right of partners to do this; equally I acknowledgethe need for travel agents to ensure they provide value to their partnersin the distribution process. There is a viable balance on both sides. In short, while the look and feel of a ‘bricks-&-mortar’ agency mightchange, as will their place of business, I believe there is a place foragents to create amazing travel experiences for their customers.Website: www.traveldaily.com.au Phone: 1300 799 220 Fax: 1300 799 221 Email: [email protected] 6
