CaliforniaAgricultural Exports2018-2019CALIFORN I A DEPA RTMENT OFFOOD & AGR I CU LTURE
California Agricultural ExportsIn 2018, California’s agricultural exports totaled 21.02 billion in value, representing an increase of1.3 percent compared to 2017. As indicated in thetable below, California’s agricultural exports havegrown substantially over the past 10 years, despiteslight contractions in 2009, 2015 and 2016.California’s top valued agricultural export commoditycontinues to be almonds, with a value of more than 4.5 billion in foreign sales in 2018. This figurerepresents a change of just over 1 percent from theprevious year’s figure. Pistachios ranked numbertwo in export value at 1.7 billion. California dairyand dairy products recorded an export value of 1.7billion in 2018, representing just over 6 percentgrowth over the prior year. The principal 57 export commodities accounted for 18.0 billion in export value in 2018, or 85 percentof the total value of California’s agricultural exports, while the remaining 15 percent of exports wereassociated with “Other Products and Mixtures”.Of the top 57 commodities exported, 15 showedan increase in export value of 5 percent ormore, compared to the previous year, while 18experienced a decrease in export value of 5 percentor more.California’s share of total U.S. agricultural exportsfor 2018 was 15.1 percent, which is up slightlycompared to the share reported in 2017. California’stop 10 export destinations – the European Union,Canada, China/Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea,Mexico, India, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates, andTaiwan – accounted for 68 percent of the 2018export value. Vietnam showed the largest growthin total export value with a 46 percent increasecompared to the previous year.California Agricultural ExportsMethodologyData to compute agricultural exports are derivedfrom official government sources, published industrysources, and unpublished information from thegovernment and the industry. Export quantities andvalues of the whole U.S. and California port districtsare from the Department of Commerce (DOC) tradedata posted on the United States International TradeCommission (USITC) online database(http://dataweb.usitc.gov/). Canadian import (value)data are from Strategis Canada’s online database(http:// strategis.ic.gc.ca /engdoc/main.html). Ifthe California export price is not available for aparticular product, we use the U.S. average exportprice for that commodity in order to provide a dollarvalue for exports.Production quantities and values are fromvarious National Agricultural Statistics Service(NASS), Economic Research Service (ERS), andAgricultural Marketing Service (AMS) publications.A share of the raw data provided in these USDAservice publications are released as a preliminaryreport early in the calendar year followed by amore accurate final report released at a laterdate. For accuracy, The University of CaliforniaAgricultural Issues Center (AIC) export estimatesuse data from final USDA reports.California Agricultural Export Values, 2008-2018YearExport Value 1 Billion2018 21.022017 20.752016 19.982015 20.812014 21.552013 21.552012 18.772011 17.232010 14.752009 12.442008 12.90California Agricultural Statistics Review 2018-20191
AIC exports estimates use different methods fromother sources, such as ERS. The ERS estimatesare based on a state’s national share of productionof the exported commodity. The ERS methodassumes that, for any particular commodity,a state’s share of U.S. production equals thatstate’s share of U.S. exports. Other sourcesuse geographic port data, without direct links towhere the product originated. The AIC exportfigures correspond to commodities that have beenproduced on farms and ranches within California.Products originated in another state and exportedvia California ports are not included in thesestatistics.California Agricultural ExportsIn most cases, AIC reports exports at the individualcommodity level. For instance, exports of a givenfruit in fresh, canned, and dried forms are summedand listed under the name of the fruit, although themethod for fresh fruit exports may differ from themethod used for canned and dried fruit. The ratioof quantity exported to quantity produced is givenon a farm weight basis. That means, for example, that wine is converted back into fresh grapes.Standard conversion factors published by theUSDA are applied.California Agricultural Statistics Review 2018-20192
