When we see a wrong to be righted,a sickness to be healed,a need to be met,and we feel it speaking to us,that is when we come close tohearing God’s call.Photo by James Gardner

Opening PrayerDear Lord of us all,We give thanks to You always, for you love us, guide us, hear us,and YES, even speak to us. Lord, come into our hearts, teach usto listen, to discern, to heed when you call, then walk with us aswe seek to do your will. Amen

Hannah, Samuel’s mother, brings him to the Temple

Hannah’s Prayer:1 Samuel 2: 1-2, 8My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high.My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you;there is no Rock like our God.

Do not keep talking so proudlyor let your mouth speak arrogance, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed. The foundations of the earthare the LORD’s; on them he hasset the world. It is not by strength that one prevails;those who oppose the LORD will bebroken. The Most High will thunderfrom heaven; the LORD willjudge the ends of the earth.Photo by James Gardner

Scripture: 1 Samuel 3: 1-10The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli.In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there werenot many visions.Reader #1

One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that hecould barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel waslying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark ofGod was. Then the LORD called Samuel.Reader #2

Samuel answered, "Here I am." And he ran to Eliand said, "Here I am; you called me."But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down."So he went and lay down.Again the LORD called, "Samuel!"Reader #1

And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said,"Here I am; you called me.""My son," Eli said, "I did not call. Go backand lie down."The LORD called Samuel a third time, andSamuel got up and went to Eli and said,"Here I am; you called me."Reader #2

Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy.So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he callsyou, say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'"So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The LORD came and stood there, calling asat the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!"Reader #1

Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."Reader #2

When we walk with the Lordin the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will,he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Then in fellowship sweetwe will sit at his feet,or we'll walk by his side in the way;what he says we will do,where he sends we will go;never fear, only trust and obey.Trust and obey, for there's no other wayto be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

I don’t hear you.

Discernment

Listening for God’s voice isn’t an easy or simple thing, andthe messages aren’t always received with perfect clarity.

If we believe we are here for a reason, then there is a mending only we can perform,a fragment of light only we can redeem,an act of kindness or courage, generosity or hospitality, even a word of encouragement or a smile, only we can perform, because we are here, in this place, at this time, facing this person at this moment in their lives.

But how do we know when we are being called? Andto what? How do we discern the voice of God?

He's got the whole world in his hands. He’s got the tiny, little baby in his hands. He's got the whole world in his hands. He's got the whole world in his hands. He's got the wind and the rain in his hands. He’s got you and me, brother in his hands. He's got the whole world in his hands. He’s got you and me, sister in his hands. He’s got the whole world in his hands.

Community PrayerEternal God, how we wish that our path forward could always be well marked. How comforting itwould be to always be certain that the choices we make are what you would want us to do. How good itwould be to know that we are applying each of our unique gifts as you would have us do. How muchsimpler it would be to live in a world of absolutes, of black and white, where every branch on our pathwas clearly marked “Right Way” or “Wrong Way.”Yet, we live in a world of shades, where it isn’t always easy to know which shade is best, so we listenfor your ever-quiet voice through discernment. Help us use the tools that you have given us to make thebest possible choices. Help us to look toward your words, to the books of the Bible, to find our direction.Help us to know that regardless of the choices that we do make, you will never leave our side, alwaysshowing us new possibilities to carry our your work through acts of love and kindness. We pray that you will pour your Holy Spirit over us as we turn to you for illumination, helping us tobe reflections of Christ’s light to the world. AMEN

We give thanks for this wonderful, generous community of faith.
